چکیده

Cosmic shear is the distortion of images of distant galaxies due to weak gravitational lensing by the large-scale structure in the Universe. Such images are coherently deformed by the tidal field of matter inhomogeneities along the line of sight. By measuring galaxy shape correlations, we can study the properties and evolution of structure on large scales as well as the geometry of the Universe. Thus, cosmic shear has become a powerful probe into the nature of dark matter and the origin of the current accelerated expansion of the Universe. Over the last years, cosmic shear has evolved into a reliable and robust cosmological probe, providing measurements of the expansion history of the Universe and the growth of its structure. We review here the principles of weak gravitational lensing and show how cosmic shear is interpreted in a cosmological context. Then we give an overview of weak-lensing measurements, and present the main observational cosmic-shear results since it was discovered 15 years ago, as well as the implications for cosmology. We then conclude with an outlook on the various future surveys and missions, for which cosmic shear is one of the main science drivers, and discuss promising new weak cosmological lensing techniques for future observations.

Cosmic Walls and Filaments Formation in Modied Chaplygin Gas Cosmology

We want to study the perturbation growth of an initial seed of an ellipsoidal shape in Top-Hat collapse model of the structure formation in the Modied Chaplygin gas cosmology. Considering reasonable values of the constants and the parameters of the model under study, we can show that a very small deviation from spherical symmetry (ellipsoidal geometry) in the initial seed leads to a nal highly ...

Cosmic Gravitational Shear from the Hst Medium Deep Survey

We present a measurement of cosmic shear on scales ranging from 10 to 2 in 347 WFPC2 images of random fields. Our result is based on shapes measured via image fitting and on a simple statistical technique; careful calibration of each step allows us to quantify our systematic uncertainties and to measure the cosmic shear down to very small angular scales. The WFPC2 images provide a robust measur...

Detection of Cosmic Shear with the Hst Survey Strip

Weak lensing by large-scale structure provides a unique method to directly measure matter fluctuations in the universe, and has recently been detected from the ground. Here, we report the first detection of this ‘cosmic shear’ based on space-based images. The detection was derived from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Survey Strip (or “Groth Strip”), a 4× 42 set of 28 contiguous WFPC2 pointings...

Cosmic Shear and Power Spectrum Normalization with the Hubble Space Telescope

Weak lensing by large-scale structure provides a direct measurement of matter fluctuations in the universe. We report a measurement of this ‘cosmic shear’ based on 271 WFPC2 archival images from the Hubble Space Telescope Medium Deep Survey (MDS). Our measurement method and treatment of systematic effects were discussed in an earlier paper. We measure the shear variance on scales ranging from 0...

Spurious Shear from the Atmosphere in Ground-Based Weak Lensing Observations

Weak lensing observations have the potential to be even more powerful than cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations in constraining cosmological parameters. However, the practical limits to weak lensing observations are not known. Most theoretical studies of weak lensing constraints on cosmology assume that the only limits are shot noise on small scales, and cosmic variance on large scale...
